Choosing a Salamander Grill
A salamander grill browns, toasts and finishes food with strong heat from above, melting cheese on a dish, colouring a gratin or toasting bread in seconds. It usually sits above the range or on a counter near the pass in busy restaurant and hotel kitchens.
Before you order, decide
- Heat source: choose gas or electric to suit your kitchen; see our electric salamanders if you prefer a plug-in unit.
- Width: how many plates or trays go underneath at once.
- Adjustable rack: moving food closer to or further from the heat gives control.
- Mounting: wall-mounted over the range saves counter space.
Keep the crumb tray clean, because a dirty tray smokes and can catch fire.
